Alpinist 30: The Climbing Life

I like to capture images of the city in the off hours when the streets are deserted. New Year's day was warm for upstate New York at 50º. The warm temperatures provided an opportunity to shoot without numb fingers. In New England, warm days in January are a gift. The city of Troy, NY was deserted when I snapped this photo [below] of a downtown alleyway's wet pavement and streetlights.

A few months back, stencil artist Joe Iurato remixed a few of my images into paintings. The image below entitled Night Climber is featured as the lead image in the current issue of Alpinist Magazine's column The Climbing Life. Congratulations to Joe on the publication of his illustration. I've worked with fellow artists before, providing image reference and stock photography, but I think Joe's painting is a great example of possibilities that photography can provide for fine artists and illustrators. I find it fascinating to see something that I've created turned into something completely different, while retaining its original character and intent.

You can see more of Joe's work at his website: www.joeiurato.com.

Mobile: Winter is the Ghost of Summer

Finally looks like winter is loosening it's grip. While the days still have no contrast and the sunsets lack any drama, you can feel summer's approach like the first few ripples of an ocean swell. Looking at the summer's photo assignments and trips, I am super excited about all of the possibilities of next few months. Over the winter I've been experimenting with toy and antique film cameras, free lensing, and alternative forms of image capture and processing. While fun, I am looking forward to the crisp images and vibrant colors of New England in the summer. Most importantly, I'm looking forward to all of the adventures that summer brings.

Remixed Photos

Stencil artist Joe Iurato has remixed a few of my images into paintings. You can see more of Joe's work at his website: www.joeiurato.com. You can visit Joe's Facebook fan page here. These images, along with Joe's other works, are currently on display at G40: The Summit from March 1st-30th, 2010 in Arlington, Virgina. More information about G40 at: http://artwhino.com/g40/

Artist Description by Joe Iurato: Why :01? A single second is the most powerful measurement of time. It can symbolize the last fleeting moment before an end, or the clear mark of a new beginning. It might stand for both, as a once dire situation finds its way to fate and a chance to start over. It’s then that :01 becomes the most significant moment in a person’s life. It’s the blessing born of hardship. Honesty, destiny and happiness sometimes find their way easiest after dirt is kicked in our faces. This work is my :01.
