Project 365

It's about time I launched my own Project 365 project.

While I'm interested to see it a year from now, I am even more curious to track a year through images. It seems like a great way to expand photo subject matter and composition technique. The project will be live on June 1st at www.johnbulmer365.com. Should make for a really cool poster a year from now. Looking forward to the challenge of keeping up with the posts and seeing how they evolve.

Saratoga 6AM

Had a photoshoot in Saratoga this morning. I got the chance to walk around town at 6am. The city has so much more charm without the push of thousands of summer invaders. I worked in Saratoga a few years back and I got a chance to know the city in the early morning hours, the hours before the world wakes up and complicates matters. My favorite time of the day in any city is the few minutes just before the sun comes up and the street lights do to sleep for the day. Being up that early is a minor form of rebellion. In an overpopulated world where space is available at a premium, having a city to yourself for a few minutes is deliciously non-conformist.

Mobil Update: 90 Degrees

It's 90 degrees today in Albany. Just got back from a photoshoot in Yaddo. Headed out for a run. I love weather like this. Seems to by my natural habitat.

Notes From a Not-Yet-Summer Day.

In the mid-80's here in New York and New England. I spent the day in Great Barrington, Massachusetts where I once saw the most original pro-war protest sign ever devised: "Make Bombs, Not Tofu." Not sure if the guy was serious, but he sure was memorable. I think of him every time I drive over the bridge and turn right onto Main Street.

Driving home through Pittsfield is a tour of abandoned malls and storefronts. Much of New England is like this. When the rest of the world thinks of New England, it is usually of church spires poking out of a think canopy of trees, bubbling streams, rolling farm fields, vineyards, and covered wooden bridges. And while those places to exist, and are indeed beautiful, most of the cities of New England are past their prime. The photographer in me is drawn to the outdated storefronts and abandoned strip malls of Pittsfield. Driving through the outskirts of the city is like urban exploration by car. Maybe the 30 year old signage reminds me of what the world was like when I was a kid? Maybe it's because I see beauty in abandoned and forgotten places? Maybe it's because anything empty or forgotten is an anomaly in our overdeveloped world? Whatever it is, there, I find a strange sense of Zen in such places.

I truly enjoy days like today when I have nothing to do but road trip around the Northeast. My daughter watches a cartoon where one of the main character's catch phrase is: "The more places you go, the more things you know." Couldn't agree more.

Wet and foggy day up on Lower Wolfjaw and Hedgehog, but I like adverse conditions. Saw only one other person out today. That is a rarity in the Adirondacks.
