Summer is officially over in a few weeks. Feels like it never started. The county fairs are in full swing. Their appearance of Carnys and country music and dusty parking lots signal summer's passing. Out past the city, the corn is well past head high and huge sunflowers dance in the breeze. Every day eats up real estate on the calendar and brings the gray, featureless days of the New England winter slightly closer. The summer sunsets are finite, but as the days grow shorter and the nights colder, each sunset means a little more.

The Off Season

The off season is my favorite time of the summer. In June, no thought is paid to summer's end. But in early September, the change of seasons is ever present. As the summer starts to drain out of New England, the afternoons remain hot, but the nights begin to cool. Weather patterns change, the sunsets explode with color, and fog becomes a common site as a reminder of constant clash between warm with cool. Makes me think of county fairs and endless fields of summer corn. Everything is sweeter because you know the supply of warm days is dwindling. Nothing is taken for granted.

The Last Berm

The Last Berm on the downhill course, Windham Mountain.
It's been a busy couple of weeks. Shot the Kenda Cup in both Mount Snow and Windham.

I have only snowboarded at Windham once and that was years ago. I had no idea what to expect. Since the UCI is being held there in 2010, I assumed there would be a considerable about of new trail construction. While not at big as most, Windham has an impressive variation of terrain and man made features and ramps. Should make for an interesting event in 2010.
