Vanilla Manhattan
The waffles I make my daughter for breakfast smell like the candied cashews that the push cart vendors in lower Manhattan sell. I need to make it back to New York. It's been too long. Last time almost killed me. I'm ready for more.

Beautiful Automation

I love the city at night. Everything runs as it should without the presence of people to help it along. Beautiful automation.
I have hundreds of these type of shots, taken out of the car window of nothing it particular. Off handed images, but telling. I like to shoot everything, not just one type of subject. My photos are my journal. It has taken me a long time to learn this lesson: Something doesn't have to be staged and ultra clean to be a good image. Sometimes it's just fun to shoot for the hell of it.

The Train to Hyannis

[Above] Toy Camera Images: The Train to Hyannis. Cape Cod, Massachusetts
The Train to Hyannis.
The woman in seat 15a is wearing too much rouge and not enough eyeliner. She clutches a souvenir photo of herself in front of some monument. She nods off to the frequency transmitted up through the floor by the contact of steel wheels rolling over steel rails. A frequency that lulls those at the end of a long day of sight seeing into neutral buoyancy. The bartender is serving drinks from behind a plywood bar lit by strings of Christmas lights. He pours perfectly as the train moves while listening to the war stories of one of his star customers. He is a master of his craft.
At 25 miles per hour, the backs of buildings and cranberry bogs pass by slow enough to take in all the details. At each railroad crossing, people in cars stare back at the train. Hundreds of people locked in a thousand yard stare, waiting for the light to turn green and the gates to lift. As we clunk to a stop at Hyannis station, there is a spontaneous round of applause. The clapping seems out of place. I don't clap. The conductor prepares for the late afternoon run. This time of day is always the busiest because of the sunset crowd. The bartender counts his tips and unplugs the Christmas lights. And the woman in 15a is awake. She applies more rouge and heads out into the afternoon heat still clutching the photo in the paper frame.

Cascade
Up way too early this morning editing photos from yesterday's hike up Cascade. We were the first on the mountain yesterday and had the summit all to ourselves. I love the words "first powder."
The upper part of the mountain, just below the summit, is a narrow trail cut through imposing walls of snow plastered pines. This section is one of my favorite pieces of trail anywhere. Amazing what a few hours in the mountains can do for your outlook on life.

Toy Cameras

More toy and antique camera images on my portfolio site: www.johnbulmerimages.com
It is no secret I love toy and antique cameras. I own boxes of them and still want more. In this sense, I am a hoarder. Just like a musician seeks out exotic sounds from vintage guitar and amp combinations, I am fascinated by the unexpected images that can be produced from a $40 plastic camera that doesn't require batteries. As a photographer, there are times when I don't want to hide behind thousands of dollars of technology and digital post-processing. I find immense satisfaction in taking the simplest camera and capturing an original and interesting image. Toy cameras make me a better photographer because they force me to remember all those lost languages of art school. I know a lot of photographers that are lost without Photoshop, auto-focus, and vibration reduction. I love technology, thrive on it actually. But it is a shame we have been lulled into laziness by convenience. -JBulmer

New Year's Day
[Above] New Year's Day, Downtown Troy, New York
Headed out into the falling snow tonight to get some camera time. Winter in New England is months of monochromatic light and soft box sun. Tonight was relatively warm at 36º and I took the opportunity to shoot the city while everyone was still recovering from the holiday. I love allowing the white balance to produce the warm tones of street lighting. Happy New Year.
