[Above] The Whiteface Observatory, Whiteface Mountain, Adirondacks, New YorkHiked Esther and Whiteface yesterday. Wasn't my finest Adirondack experience. While we never hike on the weekends, we were forced to yesterday. I now remember the vibe.
We made the unfortunate choice of picking the trail network that the race portion of the Three Peaks Challenge was on. For the entire day, we were accosted by race support staff and the constant radio chatter as they looked after 80 inconsiderate racers who were tearing up an already overused trail and throwing trash everywhere. I've done my share of adventure races, but I have never seen the circus from the perceptive of hiker trying to get out of the backcountry before dark. Today, the trail is devastated and all the participants are off tearing up another mountain. I would bet that not one cent of money raised is going to be reinvested into trail maintenance. I hope I am wrong.
